Durham County Five A Side Details 2000-01

In a titanic three way struggle at Gateshead Leisure Centre Cleveland Hall battered through the challenges of Blaydon and Redheugh to progress to the Northern Regional finals to be held in Bradford. Each team played each other three times in a group system and Cleveland got off to the best possible start with a 2-0 victory over arch rivals Redheugh. A collectors item of a goal from captain Michael Atkinson was backed up with an own goal to make for an impressive start. Two goal-less draws followed and it took an early Blaydon goal in game 4 to really set the Cleveland truck rolling. 2 quick goals from Liam Docherty and 1 from the imperious Chris Reay   made for a comfortable 3-1 win. Redheugh were next up to be dispatched 4-0 in clinical fashion, Docherty again on target and with the championship by this time a formality all that was left was to dismiss Blaydon once again in the final game by a score of 3-0.

After the tournament manager Darren Roberts confirmed he was delighted with the performance but warned that the job was only half done. The megalomaniac Roberts is clearly hoping to go one better than last year when his squad were runners up in the national finals. Whilst commenting to the site, Roberts was swamped by wellwishers including the wise old sage known to all as Mayoh and the inanely grinning Mallinson. (see picture left)

STOP PRESS : Following their victory at Gateshead, the team travelled down to Kettering for the NABC (Nat Assoc of clubs 4 young people) finals. After disposing of teams from Scotland and Ireland the team was left with the champions of Northuberland to beat in the final. With the score tied at 1-1 with only 15 seconds left, Chris Reay stepped forward and planted home a left foot drive to make the score 2-1 and spark joyous celebrations. Congratulations to all involved.

Easter Tour of Yorkshire 1998 - recap

For three days during the Easter holidays overworked parents had the opportunity to rest as 17 players and 3 adults took off on a whistle stop tour of Yorkshire. Leaving Low Fell at 8.15am on Tuesday 6 April 1999 the bus and Peugeot 106 made its way down to Garforth, just outside Leeds.

A fairly raucous group exited the bus around 2 1/4 hours later in preparation for the first game, a 35 minutes each way clash with Yorkshire Amateurs U13`s. A highly competitive game was played with Cleveland Hall playing some excellent football in fighting back to an extremely creditable 1-1 draw. Michael Anderson scored the goal and the game was also notable for Adam Sharp having to mark the biggest u13 in the history of the world.

Anderson (the fish) was also on target in the afternoon game, a 2-1 victory against Garforth Villa under 13`s. The winning goal was scored by Joe Morris (not allowed to take his mobile telephone onto the pitch), with what looked like a cross. Fortunately Garforth had 5 minutes previously replaced their goalkeeper with a midget and it flew in. All in all 2 exceptional efforts from the squad.

Onwards to York Youth Hostel where the team met up with its long lost centre half (Cruncher). Adults were expecting a quiet night but what did we know. The obligatory quiz was tolerated and whilst one team believed that Grey`s monument was built in honour of a sheep farmer and another that the only professional team with a J in their name was Jarrow St Bedes the answers were generally surprisingly accurate. Special credit going to Matthew McKenna for spelling some Yugoslavian names right and babs for thinking that we were at war with Kosovo.

Tuesday night was a long one for Forrester and Heathcote with much policing of the corridor outside the rooms. Whilst various schemes were hatched very few, if any, came to fruition. Nevertheless it was a tired bunch that came down to breakfast on Wednesday morning, and captain Acka was not impressed by the choice of cereal served up. `I should have stayed in bed` were his exact words. Having set a record for the amountof money to be poured into a fruit machine in 40 minutes the group set off for Clifton Mall bowling alley. Everybody took part, with Ken Collins in particular demonstrating a misspent youth. Players did better in the first game than the second, basically because the barriers protecting the gutters were removed. Babs came away as the champion of the `pure` bowling.

Following a quick MacDonalds we went off to the new Monks Cross Leisure Pool for the afternoon. 90 minutes was spent in the pool by all except Ken with every child being dunked underwater at some stage by either Darren or David. Jamie Scope in particular seemed to enjoy the dunking as he kept coming back for more. We were careful to make sure Joe Morris was Ok after his taste of the water just in case his mum found out! The full set of 17 was reached when Liam Cruise was ambushed on the lazy river just before getting out time.

Fatigue was beginning to set in and Corky`s monotonous catchphrases were beginning to get on everybodies nerves. Back to the youth hotel for tea before a trip to the Little Knavesmire to play Hamilton Panthers U12`s. Despite playing as if in a trance a 4-2 victory was achieved with goals from Fishy (2 more), Anthony Falcon and a screamer from Danny Hay. Cruisey skimmed the bar and Babs got to practise his hands on head pose once again.

Following the game some food was provided by Hamilton Panthers at a local pub and we sat down to watch Man U be outclassed by Juventus. Most of the players tested out the swings in the pub garden but magically appeared when the chips arrived. We returned to the youth hostel for 10pm and a relatively early night was achieved. It is however still a mystery as to how Matty S and Corky ended up in Crunch`s room in the morning. Must be teleportation.

Thursday morning started with rumours galore. We were apparently going to Sherwood Forest to all get dressed up as Robin Hood and swing around on trees. (Rumour started by Jamie Scope). However on leaving the youth hostel for the last time at 9.30am that morning with only Chris Morris managing to leave his jacket behind, the group seemed to be too tired to care.

At the entry to Flamingo Land however that attitude rapidly changed. Some went for the big rides (Terminator anyone? - not Darren or Ken anyway!) others went for the more sedate pace and Babs and Shaun were found enjoying the circus. Babs` everlasting gobstopper is at the current moment still going strong. Jamie was definitely wound up by the guy in the  haunted house (`Why did you elbow me, Jamieeeeeeeee..........) and at 4pm very few people had any money left.

Back on the road to our final game at Filey Juniors. A very competitive first half had us leading 1-0 with yet another fish goal (a chip would you believe). Fish certainly had no trouble hitting the net through the week. The second half was however one way traffic with goals from Falcon (2), Meadows (30 yarder), Babs (at last) and a own goal making a 6-0 win. Ciaran was caught offside on numerous occasions but did make one goal with a fabulous headed flick, or so he said.

The trip home went via MacDonalds at York and was only notable for Anthony Falcon managing to be sick at regular 30 minute intervals.. on the dot. Nevertheless we returned to the Gold Medal at 10.40pm on Thursday 8 April maybe tired but undefeated. Well done to all who took part.

League & Cup triumph 2002

The 2001-2002 season ended on a high point for the squad with victory in both the Gateshead Youth League and also the League Cup. In the league the squad benefitted from 17 wins in 18 games to lift the title for the second consecutive season. In the cup the team performed excellently to win the final by 2 goals to 0 in a competitive game played at Prudhoe FC. Goals were scored by Liam Docherty and the indefatigable Owen Fox and the back line was marshalled well, as ever, by Michael Atkinson.

Congratulations to the entire squad for an exceelent season.
