otball In a link up with Gateshead MBC the Association is at the forefront of the provision of girls football in Gateshead. With that in mind we are organising regular coaching sessions through the summer with a view to organising teams to take part in competitions from August onwards. The sessions will take place between 6pm and 7.20pm on Tuesday evenings and are open to girls currently in years 3,4,5&6. The first session will take place on Tuesday 29 April and children are asked to be present at 5.45pm on that day to register. All sessions will be taken by FA Qualified female coaches and based around skill development. All girls should attend in appropriate outdoor sportswear. The cost of each session is £1 and shinpads are essential. For further information please contact dlforrester@hotmail.com or clairefoy@hotmail.com FA Community Club Award click here for more info The club is delighted to announce that it has been confirmed as one of the initial clubs in the UK and the first in the North East to be awarded FA Community Club status. This is the highest accolade that can be granted by the FA and takes into account the number of qualified volunteers, access to football for all, child protection policies, football development plans and the overall quality of the organisation in providing services in the community. Every individual involved in assisting at the club should be extremely proud of such an award which effectively gives the FA`s stamp of quality to the set up currently in place at Gateshead Cleveland Hall. Eagles win - Christmas Party Two Christmas events for mini-soccer players were enjoyed by all. On Friday 20 December 93 children and adults decamped to the Telewest Arena to watch the Newcastle Eagles take on the Birmingham Bullets and also to eat enormous amounts of sweets, chips and bubble gum. The game did not disappoint with a Jeremy Hyatt three pointer on the buzzer giving the Eagles the victory and all children were suitably loud throughout. The following morning saw the latest in a series of notorious Christmas parties. No snow this year but the festivities, organised by Jacqui Hall and Tracey McCormick involved such ingenious games as `Beat Santa` (see front page picture) as well as combining raffles, board games, playstations, a crab football marathon and humongous amounts of food, most of which fortunately was left at the end to allow the writer to feed himself over Christmas. Everyone got a goody bag, most children got a prize and given the estimated numbers (over 70 but they were never in the same place at once to count!) the success of the venture was great credit to all involved. We now have our own section on friends re-united. Click on www.friendsreunited.co.uk and go to football teams in Gateshead. Mick Henry, Leader of Gateshead Council, kicks off the new Gateshead Youth Mini-Soccer League season, accompanied by Bob Boustead (club leader), Fred Elliott (club vice chairman) and Jim Sinclair (football secretary). Also present are two of the four Gateshead Cleveland Hall Under 8 teams participating this season.
100 players and almost as many adults made the now annual trip to Norton on July 21st for yet another immaculately organised event. 11 teams in all attended with players ranging from 7 years of age to 13. A remarkable 21 pitches were operating in unision with each team playing at least 5 games. The most successful squad were the under 10 yellows (below) who reached the semi finals thanks to a Lewis Munnelly scorcher before going down. No other team exited the group phase but congratulations go to Thomas Oliver U8 (his first goal), Paul Ashton U9 (many goals!), Dean Hughes U10 (goalkeeping rock), the whole team U11 (won 6-0 when they picked the formation themselves!) and Jamie Huggan U13 (one remarkable hat-trick). Also credit to Levi Oman U7 for scoring his teams only goal and then running off the pitch to tell everyone about it while the game was still going on. Better than running home anyway. A number of childrens hair changed character quickly (see below) and Steve Wallace (U8 manager) is still trying to get Cory Donnan`s hair dye off the back seat of his car. Left home 7.45am, got back 6pm : what a way to spend a Sunday.
16 U7 players, a number of parents and a very scared bus driver had a day out in Darlington on 6/7/02. Playing in the Spraire Lads and Lasses tournament, all players were playing competitive football away from the club base for the very first time. The teams were in separate groups and after a very noisy trip down with chaperone Heathcote firing questions at a surprisingly knowledgeable bunch (although Andy Cole`s middle name is definitely not Jack) started playing the first of 6 games each. The mixed team policed by Geoff Hall and John McCormick started well and despite the attempts of the odd substituted player to escape and walk back to Gateshead(!) finished with an admirable 4 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss and only 2 goals conceded. Unfortunately due to a series of freak results they were edged out of the semi finals on goal difference. Sam Roseby, Daniel Young, Levi Oman and Adam Mottershead were all on target throughout the tournament. The yellow team contained some tournament debutantes, and despite suffering an early 3-0 defeat to hot favourites Boldon went on to play the rest of their games undefeated. Lee Clay was an all-action midfied player and Conor Wood and Adam Donaldson scored frequently. Again a third place finish left them eased out of the semi-finals, but overall a very creditable performance by the squad. The day was finished off with an ice cream and an equally noisy trip on the bus back which fortunately the author was not party to. Flying the flag Team Unity Anthill Mob

U16 County Cup victory : Cleveland Hall 4-1 Whitburn and Cleadon On Tuesday 19 March Washington Nissan FC played host to the Durham County U16 Cup final between Cleveland Hall and Whitburn and Cleadon. It was the first time that the club had been represented in the U16 final and despite a number of appearances in the U18 final no club side had ever recorded a victory. In front of a crowd of around 300 Cleveland got off to the best possible start when Ian Glazinski rifled home a right footed half volley from a half cleared corner. Cleveland`s front two of Laws and Richardson were giving the Whitburn defence no respite and it came as no surprise when Chris Laws scored an impressive solo goal just before half time to make it 2-0. The Cleveland back four had been hardly troubled in the first half and the game was wrapped up in the first few minutes of the second when a wicked inswinging corner from John Morton was fumbled into his net by the Whitburn goalkeeper. Perhaps believing victory was assured Cleveland eased up and Whitburn to their credit persevered in trying to recover the game. They scored with around 20 minutes to go to make the game closerbut shortly afterwards the goal of the game settled the issue. A long kick from keeper Connell was flicked on by Richardson to Laws who struck a fierce 25 yard volley which was in the back of the net before even the keeper could move. Even Whitburn fans applauded the quality of the goal which secured the win. There was still time for Mark Heron to plant a header inches over the bar as Cleveland sought to underline their dominance, but overall it was a magnificient achievement by the team, 10 of whom had been playing for the club since the U12 season or before. Team : Liam Connell, Terry Boyes, John Stacey(capt), Michael Maughan, Lee Farrell, John Morton (sub Andy Jeffery), Ian Glazinski, Dean Bramwell, Mark Heron, Steven Richardson (sub Peter Fairless), Chris Laws
The clubs biggest ever venture went off almost without a hitch during the first week of the Easter holidays when 3 coachloads of players, officials and parents (over 130 in total) travelled off to Pontins in Blackpool to play in the annual NACYP tournament. 8 club teams were entered and notable achievers were the U16 squad which was unfortunately defeated in extra time in the final of the competition by Ealing Tornadoes and the U15 team, which after being literally kicked out of the tournament by a disgracefully behaved Irish team and a craven referee, recovered magnificently to win the plate competition. The Under 13 team deserves credit for reaching the semi finals and the U12 swere unfortunate to go out of the plate on penalties. Further success came with the award of the fair play trophy for both the Under 10 team and the Under 14 team. Everybody hit the Pleasure Beach at some time although Anthony Watson and Gary Gaffing (U13) both bottled out of the Pepsi Max Big One. Photographs from the trip appear when clicking here. The comedy night was extremely successful and Bill, Dave and Colin deserve every credit for organising what was an enjoyable evening. And for anyone who has never heard of Mr Skyner, judging by his performance you soon will. In the meantime a great deal of money was raised for the Blackpool trip so everybody benefitted.
This years mini-soccer Christmas party was aided in no small part by mother nature who ensured that around 2 inches of freshly laid snow awaited us at the club. This was naturally an opportunity that could not be missed and an impromptu game of capture the flag was set up. The exact rules to this are lost in the mists of time but it basically involved the policemans team (yellow- G Cryer), the lawyers team (blue D Forrester) and the layabouts team (red - D Heathcote) all attempting to steal each others flag with only snowballs available as weapons and a football pitch as the battlefield. Anyone who remembers the unforgettable `Jossy`s Giants` will be immediately reminded of `the siege of St James` Park`. Unsurprisingly the 15 youths acting on instruction of the policeman showed a hitherto unknown capacity for deviousness whilst the other teams battled it out with an almost Victorian emphasis on sportsmanship. All 54 participants got extremely wet and even the parents who ventured outside were soon scurrying in with their tails between their legs when a hastily arranged broadside was fired in their direction. All players seemed to enjoy the lack of positional discipline required in what was the greatest organised snowball fight seen in Gateshead in many a year. Girls football Girls football is continuing at club premises at 10.30am on Saturday mornings and the club is actively looking towards running a `turn up and play` league for local girls over the summer. Any person interested in assisting with such an endeavour or simply interested in getting involved with girls soccer in any way is asked to contact me on dlforrester@hotmail.com. Watch here for further details.

Memorial Award Gavin Jenkins (U14) was soon separated from the two dolly birds he entered with (at a football presentation!!) and the sight of John Storey doing the Timewarp was incongruous to say the least. Liam Pearson did it better anyway. We finished off with the Hokey Cokey and the Conga and the night was concluded with a majestic Forresterial rendition of American Pie. A success all around. |
